2 movies and some spirituality (?)
Hi -
This one movie, called The Warrior, looks really interesting. It seems similar to those 'ancient China kung fu epic' type of movies, but with desis. For that alone you have to watch it!
The main actor is a Muslim, I assume (Irfan Khan). Don't know much about him.
If you're into user reviews:
- Yahoo! users give it a "B-."
- IMBD folks say 7.1 stars out of 1 0.
- Critics' reviews seem favorable overall.
So, if you don't watch it in theaters (or theatres for the British readers), definitely rent it. Let me know what you think.

Another movie:
Al-Ghazali: The Alchemist of Happiness.

This one seems to have the endorsement of Sh. Abdal Hakim Murad and Sh. Hamza Yusuf (may be?). Watch the trailer. I'm definitely planning on buying the DVD. Can't hurt, right? But based on the trailer, I'm not sure if it's done in the type of narration style where you have scholars like Sh Hamza tell about Imam Ghazali (rh) and then they show part of Imam Ghazali's life? I wouldn't prefer that style to be honest. I'd just like to see the entire film and then perhaps some commentary from the scholars.
Hmm...I wonder what SunniPath would say about this?! Better not ask, man! I already think I know the answer. I think a part of me would feel bad watching an actor portray someone at such a high level as Ghazali (rh). ?!?!?
It's kinda like how there are supposed to be people making movies on Salahuddin (rh), especially after the (pretty good) movie Kindgom of Heaven with Orlando Bloom (the man!) and Liam Neelson (awesome actor). Do you watch it to gain some historical knowledge of that era and the person? Do you also watch it to support Muslims making such movies that insha Allah give good light to us? Or do you following the advice posted here: http://www.sunnipath.com/resources/Questions/qa00003386.aspx?
Sh Faraz's first sentence in response to the question ("Are we permitted to watch 'The Passion?'") and point 3 stick with me the most! Tough questions (for me). But, as my best friend would say, "let's be realistic": I'm probably gonna end up watching it. Wow, me saying that raises an entirely different spiritual/Islamic issue as well. But, it's late now and I must sleep.
Make dua for me! :)
Salaam
