Quote of the Day

Hi

Well, today's quote of the day had to be from Erik...

When driving home talking to Erik about life, relationships, and things of that nature, I had taken a slight pause in our conversation to celebrate the joy of eating ice cream and specifically the ice cream that I had just ordered from McDonald's (look, I had a crazy, inexplicable ice cream attack at the time and McDonald's happened to be the closest, most accessible source of such a fine dairy product).

In response to my cheer, Erik looked over and said to me in all seriousness, "I hope I never get as pathetic as you when I'm single."

His statement was so random that we both couldn't stop our "giggling" (as Erik referred to it for some really gay reason).

Well, to be serious here myself, the thing is I can't help it! Not being married and all ball-and-chained up gives a single guy A LOT of time to kill. Accordingly, such a single guy has to find alternative means to fulfilling satisfaction in one's life. If, by happenstance, satisfaction is achieved via ice cream, then so be it, dammit! But don't make fun of the guy! Maybe he has the same perspective on ice cream vs women as he does on jeans vs women...

Cheers

An Ode to a Raccoon...

Hi

I'm embarrassed to report to the world that I accidentally killed a raccoon today. I don't know if things will ever be the same for me.

There I was driving down the dimly lit narrow roads of Plainfield on my way back home quietly minding my own business when suddenly a raccoon with impeccable timing decides to play chicken with me; only to realize that I wasn't playing back!

To give you an idea of my traumatic experience, the sound I heard was a loud and heart-breaking "CRUNCHITY CRUNCH." I yelled like a little girl, but kept driving because I couldn't believe I was one of those people that ran over raccoons. I finally decided to pull over to check the damage to my car. But like I said I was driving down the dimly lit narrow roads of Plainfield, so I couldn't tell a fricken thing!

After being satisfied that I didn't cause any damage to the c-dub [credit Sami for the name of my car] - at least externally - I was compelled to drive back to the scene of the heinous crime. Soon enough, I came across the 'coon. He lied there lifeless in the middle of the road. Or so I thought.

I looked closer (never leaving my car for fear of an army of 'coons would come to claim vengeance) and saw that it was breathing. Surprisingly, the innocent creature of Allah wasn't bloodied up. After staring for ten minutes arguing with myself as to what I should do, I drove off depressed as to what I just did. :(

Poor guy. He's hopefully been able to muster up enough strength to crawl back to the side of the road to safety where his children eagerly await him. His wife is probably out there running through all the cornfields of Plainfield in desperate search for her...

Okay, I'm being dramatic now. But I believe that this is the only way I can cope with this. I feel bad. I said "inna illahi wa inna ilahi rajioon." I think that's enough, right, inshaAllah? And writing an ode to him. I mean, that's pretty big, too, right?

Well, here's some info on raccoons. Apparently, even if I wanted to nurse him back to health, I couldn't. Something about rabies...

Muslim Pick-up Lines...

AA

These are always entertaining, but I don't recommend using them. You may get slapped. Trust me, I use them during the ISNA conventions ALL the time, and I never seem to get anywhere. I just don't get it. Here, read 'em yourself...

  1. "I'd like to be more than just your brother in Islam."
  2. "To watch you pray is a sin of its own."
  3. "Will my platinum VISA cover your dowry?"
  4. "Muslims are supposed to have many children, and I am willing to do
    my part..."
  5. "Do you believe in the hereafter? Oh you do? Then you know what I'm
    hereafter."
  6. "Lets get married so I don't have to lower my gaze every time you
    walk in the room."
  7. "I've had to fast every day since the day that I first saw you."
  8. "Would you like to help me wake up for Fajr?"
  9. "Are you a Shiite? Because when I saw you, I said to myself, "She
    aiight."
  10. "Girl, you fine. I see praying five times a day has paid off."
  11. "I know Halal meat does a body good, but damn, how much you been
    eatin'"
Okay, seriously, I think these are the types of things Ali or Umar would say to girls if I didn't manage their personal affairs. Man, I'm the greatest little brother EVER!!! (mashaAllah.)

Orlando Meeting

AA

Well, two weekends ago I was in lovely Orlando, Florida for work. The weather was not as warm as I'd hope, but low 60s is practically a heat wave coming from Chicago! MashaAllah, the presentation went well and the clients seemed pleased overall.

It's always enjoyable to attend these meetings for me because I finally get to meet my clients in person. Typically, we handle everything (because all my clients are basically on the West Coast) via teleconferences and so investigator meetings are my only chance to actually meet them in person, unless they fly me out for a kick-off meeting.

Anyway, what's always interesting is putting a face to the voice. It's only natural that after speaking to someone you've never seen in person you begin to get pictures of who they were. Like one client I speak to has an amazingly sexy voice. I mean, she is hot. And for some reason, I always thought that she HAD to be pretty. I was joking around with one of my project assistants and she - to this day - teases me about it. She'll be like, "Oh Imran, I talked to so-and-so today? Are you jealous?" or "Really? You talked to so-and-so today? Awww. No wonder you're so happy." Later we found out that this client was pregnant and on her way for maternity leave, so then my assistant insisted that I have a thing for pregnant women. Rumors of that at work still live on...

Anyway, one day I was talking to another client at the same company where the hot-voiced, pregnant client worked at and she was telling me that, "So-and-so's baby is going to be sooo beautiful, Imran. Have you ever seen so-and-so in person?" I thought I was dreaming. "Umm, no I have not had the opportunity as yet," I responded ever so professionally (trying my best to conceal any sort of anticipation of what she might tell me). "Well, so-and-so is REALLY beautiful. She's Persian and has dark hair. She...blah, blah, blah." She could have said "She is also a psychotic man killer," but at that moment I felt indemnified of all past, present, and even future teasing from my project assistant.

I felt great knowing that my instincts served me well...

So, for a handful of the clients that I was going to meet in Orlando, I had formed the following images:

[1] Client 1 (female): She sounded older. In her mid-40s. Her marriage status was a bit questionable to me because she had mentioned at one point that she was planning to watch the Super Bowl with a bunch of her girl friends. So then I thought to myself, Okay, she's in her 40s. Single. And probably overweight.

[2] Client 2 (female): Also sounded older. I thought she HAD to be African-American. Not fat, but not skinny, but most unquestionably Black.

[3] Client 3 (female - yes, most my clients are in fact women! Woo hoo!): Older. But, like, REALLY old. So old that I thought she had to be too old to get her job, but probably only has it because she seemed really nice and filled some quota. She generally talked slowly and didn't seem to get instructions I'd give her.

[4] Client 4 (male): Young guy. Likely to be average looking; maybe even kinda decent. But, based on personality and voice pitches at times, he was most definitely gay.

And the results...

[1] Client 1: She was surprisingly young! Somewhere in her early 30s. And she seemed really fit, actually. Wildly curly hair. The only thing I had right was that she was Middle Eastern. In fact, just a few years ago she had come over from Egypt - though it was hard to assess if she was Muslim.

[2] Client 2: Okay, not bad, Imran, I thought to myself when I met her. She was older (let's say 40s - 50s), so I had that part down. Unfortunately for me, however, Client number 2 was most unquestionably white as snow. I almost tried to force myself to think, Maybe she has some sort of skin pigmentation disfigurement? But the more I talked to her, the more I wanted to kick myself for thinking she was Black!

[3] Client 3: Okay, she was older, but not more than 40-something. And, this sounds bad, if you saw her from a distance, you would have thought she was totally hot. I was impressed and very shocked. Unlike Luke Skywalker, my feelings had failed here, too. And her slowness of talk wasn't as bad in-person as I thought...

[4] Client 4: I was soooo expecting a clean shaven kinda guy, but instead I got someone with a full beard and a semi-balding head. Probably in his 30s, I'd say. He was the type of guy that, when meeting in person, has to speak to you as though being more than three inches away from you was the equivalent of being in another area of the hotel resort. I wasn't too surprised by that, though. I am happy (I guess) to say that my "gaydar" for this guy may have been right, though it was most certainly difficult to tell because at times he did remind me of a rabbi professor I had at DePaul.

So, what does this say about me? What does it say about creating images of people before meeting them? That stereotypes are wrong, politically incorrect, mean, and very judgmental? Well, screw you, too! At least my haunches were right about client "So-and-so"!! Who cares if I was dead wrong about these four clients? Maybe it differs from client-to-client? Or maybe I really need to get married so I don't find myself having all this time to think and write about stuff like this.

You should know that the rest of my time in Orlando was fine. Hardcore chillaxin in my room and some fun the next day with Shamu and the sharks at Sea World. Yes, by myself...

Have I ever mentioned that I need to get married?

Cheers

Akon - "Ghetto - Arab Remix"

What up?!

A remix Akon did with these Arab rappers that rap in Danish and Arabic. It's really good, actually. I wish I understood the Danish and Arabic, but I think you'll like it anyway, especially if you're a fellow Akon fan...

An Ode To A Kashmiri...

Hi

It's no secret that I've been on edge lately with my love-hate, passionate, and flaming relationship with Ahmed Hassan. His guju-like antics have been annoying to me. Despite that, I fall victim to his flamingly hot hair and messages of, "I still love you" after he hardcore disses me. It's painful, but in true fashion of a woman, I come back to him each time as if nothing has happened.

What his charm is, I don't know. I wonder how a presumably sane girl could ever fall in love with a guy like him. If there IS a girl out there, she's gotta have a thing for rollercoaster rides, because AH puts you through the biggest emotional rollercoaster ride of your life...

Here's a recent gmail chat we had shortly after my Mexico City trip:

Ahmed: look who it is...

me: Wow. How are the wife and kids? It's been so long. Is Prince Junior off to college now?

Ahmed: actually i named my firstborn imran, after a friend i used to have got kidnapped in mexico. i never heard from him since

me: Kidnapped? I heard that he made a run for the border b/c his old best friend (some Kashmiri prince guy) left him... The story is being put out everywhere. Hell, maybe I should put it on my blog?

Ahmed: wouldnt know about that, cuz last i heard the punjabi kid just used the kashmiri to go see his house in stl, then immediately cut off all contact

me: "An Ode to the Kashmiri-Punjabi Love Affair"

Ahmed: my mom always told me never to get emotionally involved with punjabis "theyll ALWAYS end up breakin ur heart" she would say. i shoulda known

me: Is that what you heard?

Ahmed: thats what i KNOW

me: I've been told through great Punjabi narrations of epic love stories that "The Kashmiri will entrance you, take you to his home, make you fall in love with him, his hometown, his parents. And then, when you're at Cloud 9, he'll drop you like an anvil dropping on Wild E Coyote" (I may have lost something in the translation). But that's pretty much it in a nutshell.

Ahmed: thats cuz the translation was misinterpreted by uneducated punjabi servants

me: InshaAllah, I plan a rescue party for this guy's lost soul. Maybe he'll be reunited with his friend one day. Maybe. If only there are 100 other people around, though... On a serious note...does Taha know you're IM-ing me? Is he in the same room? I mean, did you get the authorization to do this? You know? Talk to me without Taha not being in a 15 feet radius?

Ahmed: on an ACTUAL serious note, do u even know who this is? im NOT taha or aj or sami or lord v or or krishna or tariq or farooq or raja or [insert girl name]

me: oooh wow.

Ahmed: yea thats what i thought

me: I see how this is. I see how a dirty Kashmiri has to play this dangerous game of love

Ahmed: well this dirty kashmiri has to get his beauty sleep, but word around the hood is he might see u here tomm night in which case i would cancel EVERYTHING

me: That's a lie. I'm going to see Taha, that's about it!
LIAR!!

Ahmed: but in the mean time, all i can do is pray that the rumors are true

me: You wouldn't cancel ANYTHING for me!! In fact, you'd come up with convoluded stories of how you've all-of-a-sudden heated up your mom's food and can't have me over to chill out

Ahmed: low blow!! that actually happened

me: Now imagine THAT!!!

Ahmed: thats it, im going to bed, and i best wake up tomm and u best get down here to see me!!

me: Damn straight it actually happened! Go to bed. Dream of a love that once was, too... :P

Ahmed: DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

---

That was the last time I ever heard or seen Ahmed Hassan and thus the inspiration to write this ode to him. If you've seen him, please call 9-1-1 right away. He needs to be held accountable for what he does. Oh, and if you do see him, tell him that I still love him...

Peace out, A-Town.

Da Bears: An End of a Season to Remember

It wasn't Peyton Manning or the Colts that beat us; it was the Bears not being themselves that made us lose. They didn't win because they were just oh-so-good, they won because we were oh-so-bad. The Colts didn't beat the best team in the NFC. Now don't get me wrong here - Da Bears are the best team in the NFC, but it wasn't Da Bears that FINISHED that game, if you know what I mean. We gave up a winnable game.

Look, I can't tell you how I feel right now. To say "angry," "depressed," "happy about going to the Super Bowl," etc. just doesn't quite do it, folks. But I do appreciate the people out there that have been nice and tried to sympathize via emails, texts, etc. It's appreciated.

You see, I've got a trillion emotions running in me right now. At one moment you will find me content about the season: Rex's first full year as a QB despite year-after-year of season ending injuries - where any other person in the world would never recover from - was a pretty good sign (this is something, btw, I've been saying before all the f-ing sports writers have). The 1-2 punch of Jones and Benson is absolutely lethal; Jones proved that he's the hardest working person out there on offense and Benson kinda proved his money's worth. The "new" #23 is remarkable. Berrian is lightning itself reincarnated. We do have a tight end and he makes huge plays for us. Our DEF is unstoppable and clutch. Our coaching is solid. Our true fandom ever present. 15-4 for the season, baby.

And yet another moment you will see me in rage: What the hell was wrong with Turner's and Rivera's pathetic play calling during the freaking game? Why didn't they run more? Why did the play a kind of prevent defense the entire time and NOT pressure Manning more? Why can't Rex take a snap? What the hell was Rex thinking with some of those passes? Where was our f-ing hits/tackling on defense? WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED?! How could we go from 14 points in the 1st quarter to scoring 3 points over the next 55 minutes? How could we NOT have staged a comeback when we were only 5 down in the 4th? How come adjustments were NOT made?! What the...?! How could we NOT run the ball more?! Is that NOT what we did against the flippin Saints? Did we not run all over them? Why didn't they put Adrian Peterson after Benson was out?

Other times you'll find me sympathetic: Man, we lost but Jones got ~115 yards on just 15 carries. I feel for Lance Briggs; he was emotional after the game which shows me just how badly he wanted and expected it. Hey, we made it this far, man. The Super Bowl. We "lost" to a future NFL QB legend, hall of famer, and one of the greatest QBs of all time. Devin Hester is in fact ridiculous. Poor Benson. Poor Urlacher, Kreutz, Maynard, etc. (i.e. guys who've always been there even through bad seasons). No defense can possibly play the level that we did for the length of time we were out on the field.

You'll also find me genuinely pissed off to where I don't care about anything. Or depressed to where I feel like never leaving my bed. Hopeful that this is a bad dream that I'm bound to wake up from any second now. And also hopeful for next year. When someone told me to "Get over it," I can't help but to shake my head knowing that people like that just don't get it (this after controlling my rage upon hearing something so, as Rex would say "ignorant.")

Alright, I could go on and many of you will probably not understand a single thing I say. Guys on the Bears list would. Guys who've been die hards like I have through winning AND losing seasons would. And the same guys who'll be right back there next season cheering for da team like it's, yes, 1985...

Bear Down for life. Da Bears.

Evo vs Lambo: Top Gear

AA

If you're a guy and have ever been on YouTube, you should be very well acquainted with the phenom British show called Top Gear (see http://www.bbc.co.uk/topgear/ or http://www.topgear.com/). Thanks to EJ (Ejaaz), by the way, for introducing me to Top Gear via my brother many months ago.

Anyway, it's great. The guy basically has one of the greatest dream jobs out there. He test drives cars on a race track and shows you their capability. One awesome one was of a Lotus outdoing an Apache helicopter. Seriously, type those key words in YouTube - you will not regret it!

But for now, enjoy this. A Mitsubishi Evo 8 versus a Lamborghini Murcielago:

Mad props to Mitsubishi. I'm so buying that car!
